Alpha Coffee Table

alpha-coffee-table.jpgYou read it here first. This one-of-a-kind conversation table was inspired by a Paris flea market find, then designed exclusively for us by a London graphic designer with a penchant for, and a large personal collection of, antique printers’ blocks. Iconic top is carved from one single piece of wood with raised letters and numbers painted in 10 different colors. Vintage crackled finish varies slightly from table to table and adds to the “as found” charm. Top is protected with tempered glass and framed modern in a soft black powdercoated steel base.

Kaiju Big Battle Brooklyn

kaijubig.jpgAfter Godzilla emerged from the ocean to wreak havoc in the horrible 1998 film bearing his name, New Yorkers have longed to see large creatures duke it out on their shores once again. Even though that radioactive lizard is long gone that chance has finally come again. On Saturday, August 23rd Kaiju Big Battle emerges from the murky depths of it’s usual home at Manhattan’s Webster Hall to descend upon Brooklyn. The event sponsored by MeanRed and Studio Kaiju, takes place at The Yard in Carrol Gardens and combines an enthusiasm for Japanese comic book monsters with the violently entertaining spectacle that is the wrestling match. For a small fee you’ll be able to see beasty hand-made behemoths locking horns with gruesome movie prop giants on the Bay of Gentrification known as the Gowanus Canal. Attendees will also be able to privy to some premium musical performances from by the likes of Peelander Z, Junk Science, Nick Hook and Team Facelift. Be there or be bodyslammed.

Bourbon Old-Fashioned

oldfashioned.jpgThe Old Fashioned is one of six basic drinks listed in David A. Embury’s classic The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks (the others being the Martini, Manhattan, Daiquiri, Sidecar, & Jack Rose).
If you own a bar, learn how to make it. And when you don’t know and you ask me and I tell you, don’t tell me you don’t have sugar. You own a bar (for now) so have it on-hand, retard.

3 dashes bitters
1 tsp water
1 sugar cube
3 oz bourbon whiskey
1 slice orange
1 cherry

In an old-fashioned glass, muddle the bitters and water into the sugar cube, using the back of a teaspoon. Almost fill the glass with ice cubes and add the bourbon. Garnish with the orange slice and the cherry. Serve with a swizzle stick.

Joseph Blake

blake.jpgI met Joseph today in the office and had a chance to look at his work up close and personal. To see his artwork in person really allowed me to see the detail in his shading, coloring and technique. He mentioned that he has a show currently on exhibition somewhere in Philly but I don’t have any of the details. Joseph, if you’re reading this, drop me a line and give me the details.

Pangaea Project’s Charitable Tees

pangeaproject1.jpgT-shirts are a dime-a-dozen these days, but when you see Pangaea Project’s designs, you’ll instantly know they’re special. Spearheaded by Chrissie Lam, the Pangaea T-shirt Project is an effort to “connect artists and activists, communities and causes,” and profits benefit her efforts in Rwanda and other developing nations. Made from super-soft organic tees donated by Save Khaki and others, with some made in Uganda, the shirts are emblazoned with quirky graphics by artists like Bryan Collins, Steve Green, Chris McNally, and Jon Theiss (pictured above, left).

Fast Friday

fastfridayfilm.jpgThe film is named for the monthly event, “Fast Friday”, which was started by clothing designer Dustin Klein (Cadence clothing) as a way to bring together Seattle’s fixed gear riding community. In 2006, the year Fast Fridays got started, director David Rowe started showing up and participating, camera in tow. A year and 30 hours of footage later, he had the material for his documentary about the emergence of Seattle’s fixed gear community. Not to mention footage showing off some of today’s most talented riders.

Le Corbusier Le Grand

lecorb.jpgLe Corbusier Le Grand is an enormous and enormously appealing monograph on one of the greatest and most controversial visionaries of the twentieth century: Le Corbusier (1887-1965). Publisher Phaidon’s super-sized volume features thousands of stunning photographs of the seminal architect, his buildings and plans, writings, and related documents (sketchbooks, personal snapshots, even postcards). With the turn of each page, readers can follow Corbusier’s trajectory from revolutionary young artist and prolific writer to globe-trotting, celebrity-crusader for modern architecture and urban planning. Esteemed architectural historian and Corbusier expert Jean-Louis Cohen provides an elegant introductory essay to this veritable archive of images. We learn that although the Swiss-born Le Corbusier hailed from a small town in a small country under the modest name Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, he was destined for greatness–largely of his own design. A prime mover behind the International Style (perhaps the first truly global architectural-design language), Corbusier brought modern design principles and their promise of improved living standards to the world stage. Futuristic high rise apartment complexes, office towers, highly functional streamlined interiors and furniture made primarily of industrial materials may all be attributed in part to him and his controversial utopian mission to transform our daily lives into a highly functional and beautiful system. Le Corbusier Le Grand is an extravagant, yet essential tome for libraries, those interested in modernism, city planning, and especially those with a really big coffee table. –Lauren Nemroff

Replica of Belstaff’s ’50s Jacket

jacket_h.jpgNow available at Oi Polloi: a replica of Belstaff’s fifties motorcycle jacket. The vintage style is more than worthy of a trawl through the archives, but this one also has some history to recommend it: Che Guevara wore the original during his famous motorcycle ride across Latin America. Self-styled revolutionaries are now only $800 away from hanging up that Che tee for good.
About $793, available at Oi Polloi
